In the telegraphic correspondence on the subject
of the British share of the Chinese Boxer Indemnity which
has passed during the prut year, reference has been made
to the possibility of diverting some part of this money
to the payment of various British obuius, which the Chinese
themselves have professed their intention to pay as soon
as funds are available for the purpose, and the pros and
cons of such a chynge in our policy have on several occa-
sions been considered ( see for instance your telegram
No.57 of May 13th 1927). As you are aware, I have con-
sistently urged that the politionl disadvantages of such
a step outweigh any advanƒuge it might have on grounds of
economy oz of equity, and I have advocatud that we should
at any rate avait the outcome of the presont state of po-
litical confusion in this country before coming to any
